TWB Technology – WHY?

During the past two decades fuel conservation and safety mandates along with environmental concerns have prompted the automotive industry to design lighter cars for reduced fuel consumption while improving the overall structure of their vehicles for occupant safety. Therefore, the concept of combining various steel options into a welded blank was developed to enable product and manufacturing engineers to "tailor" the blank so that steel’s best properties were located precisely within the part they were needed.

TWB Technology – WHAT it is?
  • Tailor Blanks are welded steel sheets of various thickness, grades or coatings.
  • Tailor blanks facilitate the production of components with integral reinforcements, optimally matched to the subsequent load. This enables component weight to be reduced whilst simultaneously enhancing rigidity, compared to conventional production methods.
  • The forming of tailored blanks is almost identical to that of unwelded sheets
  • Tailored blanks are predominantly used as reinforcing components in the Automotive industry, eg., as Side Members, Pillars, Door reinforcements-Door Inners and Floor pans

TWB Technology –The potential of benefits is impressive

Tailor Welded Blank Technology reduces the number of individually manufactured components giving the following benefits:

  • Less number of Dies to be used giving the following advantages
    • Reduced Tooling Costs
    • Reduced Lead Time in Product development
    • Productivity Increase in Press Shop

  • Dispensing with Welded-on reinforcements and overlapping joints
    • Improves resistance to Corrosion behaviour
    • Reduces Spot Welding/ Sealing
    • Productivity increase in Body Shop

  • Cost Benefits
    • Less Material Input – Better Utilization of Steel approx 25~35%
    • Scrap Reduction
    • Increased Offal utilization

  • Weight Reduction
    • Fewer Parts
    • Utilization of differential Steel Strengths

  • Fuel Efficient Vehicle
    • Lighter Vehicle
