Industrial lasers are designed to concentrate high amounts of energy into a small, well defined spot - approximately .003 - .006 inch in diameter when using short wavelength lasers. The resulting energy density heats, melts, or vaporizes materials in this small defined area. The beam's energy is applied only where it is needed, minimizing the heat affected zone surrounding the focus area.
Nd:YAG is among the most important industrial lasers. The Nd:YAG works well with metals, especially those that are highly reflective. Some non-metals such as ceramics can also be processed with the YAG.
YAG lasers enjoy wide acceptance in marking applications.
